Essential Tips for Playing Golf in Japan
Before you tee off, here are key things to know about golf course etiquette and expectations across Japan.
Caddie Support
Traditionally, all rounds in Japan included a caddie per group. While this is still the norm at many courses, an increasing number now allow self-play due to a caddie shortage. Availability varies by club, so it’s best to confirm in advance.
Lunch Breaks
Unlike in many countries, golf in Japan includes a mandatory lunch intermission after the front nine. Most courses enforce a 40–60 minute break, which may extend beyond an hour on weekends. Many clubhouses offer illustrated menus, making meal selection easy even for non-Japanese speakers. Hokkaido and Okinawa are the main exceptions, where continuous play may be permitted.
Golf Carts
The standard setup is a shared golf cart per group, typically accommodating four players and one caddie. In self-play rounds, carts may be controlled remotely—or manually at some courses. At high-end clubs that prioritize tradition, players might be required to walk the course alongside a caddie, as carts are not always used.
Equipment Rental
Rental clubs and shoes are available at most courses, though fees vary.
Please note: shoe sizes above 28cm (US 10.5+) may be difficult to find.
Gratuity
Tipping is not expected in Japan. However, offering a small tip as a gesture of appreciation to your caddie is certainly welcomed.
Club Shipping Service
Japan’s courier system makes golf travel convenient. You can ship your golf clubs directly to or from any course via services available at airports, hotels, convenience stores, or courier offices. This allows for hassle-free travel without carrying bulky equipment.
Make sure to send your gear 2–3 days ahead of your tee time.
Dress Code
Japanese golf clubs maintain strict dress codes and ask that all visitors dress respectfully.
For Gentleman: Collared shirts (mock necks accepted) with golf trousers or shorts. Shorts should be of modest length, no more than 3 inches above the knee. The following attire is not allowed: tank tops, t-shirts, denim, athletic wear, or swimwear.
For Ladies: Golf-appropriate dresses, skirts, slacks, and tops are acceptable. Skirts or shorts should not exceed 5–6 inches above the knee. Items such as halter tops, sweatpants, and denim are not permitted.
Headwear: Hats must be worn with the brim facing forward.
Tattoos
Visible tattoos are generally not accepted at Japanese golf clubs. In many places, players with tattoos may be denied entry or asked to cover them entirely.
